As a search engine optimiser I often find myself using words like “optimising for Google” “increasing your Google rankings” “your google position has increased” You may be wondering why I refer everything towards Google and not search engines in general? Well the answers simple…

In the UK, Google search properties (Google.co.uk and Google.com) accounted for 87% of all UK searches in May 2008. I know this data is a little out of date, but I would say this only means the actual percentage to date is even higher. At an increase of 12% from 2007-2008 this shows what a dominant force in the search engine world Google has become.

This doesnt mean Im saying forget about the other search engines. My rule is concentrate on gaining good Google rankings using long term ethical methods and this should hopefully put you in good sted to also ranking highly on other large search engines such as Yahoo and MSN. In my experience this works for some and not for others, but hay you cant have everything :)
